NATMAP Raster provides georeferenced digital images of the Australian Government's 1:250,000 scale topographic maps covering the whole of Australia.

The product is ideal to use anywhere a large number of maps is required, or where storage is limited. By replacing 513 maps with just two CDs, the maps are conveniently accessible, compact to store and the images will not wear out. The maps in NATMAP Raster are compatible for use in combination with Global Positioning System, Geographic Information System, and graphics software.

NATMAP Raster 250K contains all the software needed to use the maps on the Windows 95/98/2000/NT4/Me/XP operating system - all you need is Internet Explorer 5.5.

Which version (Mapsheets or Mosaic) should I buy?

In 2003, two versions of NATMAP Raster were released. The differences are outlined below.

Mapsheets:

bulletall 513 1:250,000 scale NATMAPs plus three map insets are included as individual maps. Each map image is supplied with all surrounding map information including legend, scale bar, and technical information about the map and its projection.
bulletuses the Map Grid of Australia as their projection, meaning that the coordinates of the maps are measured in metres and the maps can be used for measuring distances and areas.
bulletpixel size is 31.75m.

Mosaic:

bulletall 513 1:250,000 scale NATMAPs plus three map insets are joined together into one map.
bulletThe coordinates are latitude/longitude, which are ideal for interfacing with GPS software, but are not suitable for measuring distances or areas.
bulletThe pixel size in metres varies depending where you are in Australia - from 36m in Torres Strait to 26m in Hobart.
bulletMosaic also includes a single map image of all 1:1,000,000 NATMAPs and a Landsat Satellite Image Mosaic of Australia, both of which use latitude/longitude coordinates.

The sources of the map images used in NATMAP Raster are the Australian Government's 1:250 000-scale NATMAPs. The satellite image included in the Mosaic product was produced by the Australian Greenhouse Office from Landsat satellite imagery supplied by ACRES.

ECW logo (GA2139)Maps are stored in Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) format. This image format stores images like Zip files or JPEGs, but at a much higher compression rate with minimal loss of picture quality. For more information on this image format, please refer to the Products page on the ER Mapper website.

Copyright of the data used in the Place Name Search resides with the relevant State, Territory and Commonwealth governments within Australia, who are the custodians of the information within their jurisdiction.

To ensure positional accuracy, all 1:250,000 scale digital maps were created by directly converting the digital data used to produce the maps into images, rather than by scanning a paper map.

Selecting, Viewing, Printing and Exporting NATMAP Raster Maps

NATMAP Raster 250K Mapsheets comes with map viewing software called RASTER VIEWER developed in conjunction with CSIRO Mathematics and Information Sciences. The RASTER VIEWER software allows the user to select maps from

bulletthe zoomable map index,
bulletthe list of map numbers,
bulletthe list of map names,
bulletthe Gazetteer of Australia,
bulletby latitude and longitude, or
bulletMGA grid coordinates.

RASTER VIEWER allows you to zoom and pan on the maps. The Viewer also displays the position of the cursor and your location relative to the rest of Australia. See an example [JPG 57Kb]. In Mapsheets, when you roam off a sheet, the click-pan tool allows you to follow a feature across map sheets by loading the neighbouring map at the map view scale and correct location.

You can print the whole map or the currently displayed area. Additional information such as the map name, the coordinates of the top left and bottom right corners, and a scale bar (Mapsheets only) are also printed.

It is easy to export the currently displayed area to GeoTIFF, TIFF, PNG, JPEG or BMP formats. The GeoTIFF option keeps all of the geographical information for the file. The ECW images can be viewed directly in many software packages by downloading an ECW plug-in for your software from the ER Mapper website.
